Probably, still life.
ACUR,Spain, 2024
In the framework of the project "probably, still life", I have investigated the complex relationships humans have with the material world and the traces of property records, which often carry a psychological or sentimental burden. Inspired by the philosophy of materialism, especially the works of Jean Baudrillard, as well as the compelling narratives of Orhan Pamuk's collections of objects, I aim to decipher the enigmatic stories hidden in seemingly mundane objects. We live surrounded by many objects, and some of them become important memories or symbols for us. In my research, I discovered that these traces are very rare. Most often, cherished objects were preserved by children, and there were sporadic mentions in personal letters. Historically, truly beloved objects were neither recorded, described, nor documented, and thus, were lost to memory.
Studying documents from the 17th century, I found that the main purpose of property registration was taxation and rent collection. Today, when the value of psychological comfort, relationships, and joy in the everyday environment is recognized, I want to focus on the material world, investigating the changing dynamics between property, identity, and memory.
My installation consists of various elements that symbolize different aspects of the material world and our relationships with it.
For a deeper investigation, I have created a collective archive. Visitors are invited to fill out questionnaires where they can share their stories and thoughts on the importance of material objects in their lives.
